Facebook offers new Subscriptions payment link for creators to circumvent Apple’s App Store fees

Mark Zuckerberg announced on Wednesday that Facebook is launching a promotional link for creators for their Subscription offering in order to circumvent the App Store’s 30% fees.

With the new payment link on Facebook’s Subscription tool, which allows creators to charge fans on a recurring basis for exclusive content, fans will be directed to a web link to pay for creators via Facebook Pay.

When fans subscribe using this link, creators will keep all the money they earn – minus taxes.

Apple’s App Store currently prohibits iOS apps from offering alternative payment options for purchasing digital goods. A Facebook spokesperson said that Facebook isn’t completely removing the ability for fans to sign up for a creator subscription using Apple’s own payment system.

Zuckerberg also announced that Facebook is launching a bonus program that pays creators for each new subscriber they get as part of its $1billion creator investment announced this summer, regardless if they pay through the custom web link or through Apple and Google’s systems.

Starting in December, Facebook will also give the ability for creators to download the email addresses of all of their new subscribers.
