Kim Kardashian: Hollywood will shut down in April

Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, the mobile game that allowed players to live out their A-list dreams, is set to shut down almost a decade after its successful launch in 2014.

The game, which allowed users to climb the social ladder, make appearances with Kim, Khloé Kardashian, and Kris Jenner, and purchase in-game currency for various in-app activities, will be closing its virtual doors on April 8, 2024.

Kim Kardashian confirmed the news in an interview with People magazine, expressing gratitude to the dedicated community that has supported the game over the past ten years. Although a free-to-play title, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood managed to earn over $160 million and defied initial skepticism, becoming a model for mobile games tailored towards young women.

The game has played a significant role in shaping the mobile gaming landscape, contributing to 54% of Glu’s revenue in the latter half of its launch year.

For those who installed the game prior to its removal, a notice within the game alerts them to the impending shutdown. In-app purchases have been disabled, marking the end of an era for the virtual Hollywood experience.

The game’s legacy underscores the influence of celebrity collaborations in the industry, serving as a “permanent marketing asset” and a source of “in-built promotion,” as emphasized by former Glu CEO Niccolo de Masi in 2015.

Existing players can still enjoy the game’s features until the official shutdown date, marking the end of an influential chapter in mobile gaming history.

“I’m so grateful from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has loved and played Kim Kardashian: Hollywood in the past ten years,” Kardashian said in a statement. “This journey has meant so much to me but I’ve realized that it’s time to focus that energy into other passions. I want to thank the Glu team and the many people behind the scenes who have worked diligently on making it a success. I will be forever inspired by this community that we built together.”
