Apple shuts down its weather app Dark Sky

Apple’s popular weather app ‘Dark Sky’ is no longer available for iOS users as of January 1st. The tech giant had already removed the app from its App Store in September, but it was still functioning for existing users until the first day of 2023.

Dark Sky was acquired by the iPhone-maker back in March 2020 for an undisclosed amount, and it has been an inspiration for many features the Apple Weather app offers now.

In a blog post shared last month, Apple said that Weather app users can now get hyperlocal forecasts for their current location, check out the hourly forecast for the next 10 days, and also receive alerts for extreme weather conditions, such as those sent by governments.

However, in order to use these features, your device needs to be running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, or macOS 13 Ventura operating systems.

According to Dark Sky’s website, its API will continue to operate until March 31st, 2023, but third-party developers won’t be able to use it after that.
