Roblox explores generative AI for easier game creation

Popular online game platform Roblox announced on Friday that it’s exploring language-based generative AI to allow developers create games in a much easier and faster way.

The company’s Chief Technology Officer Daniel Sturman said in a blog post that they’re getting ready to roll out the tests for its two new AI tools to Roblox developers in the upcoming weeks.

The first tool will let them create generative AI materials from a text prompt, and the second one will enable them to handle the coding process behind the game. Since they won’t require any experience in coding and model design, Roblox hopes its upcoming AI tools will make everyone become a creator on its platform.

Sturman also talked about the technical challenges behind the implementation of the tools.

‘’First, the tools have to be suited to things a user would create, and how they might fit into an in-experience creation environment. Second, in all cases we need to keep Roblox safe and civil. This means we need to build a fast and scalable moderation flow for all types of creation. Third, we need an economic system that encourages such creation. Roblox stands apart as a platform with a robust creator-backed marketplace and economy, and we must extend that to support in-experience user-creators as well as AI algorithm developers.’’

‘’As we do this, we remain aware of the need to implement generative AI thoughtfully and ethically on the Roblox platform, in line with the value we have always placed on respecting our community,’’ he added.

For the fourth quarter of 2022, Roblox reported a revenue of $579 million, up 2% year-over-year. The average number of its daily active users also rose by 19% to 56.8 million.
