After the release of Greta Gerwig’s movie “Barbie”, it has been the search term with the highest search count on Amazon. Barbie also helped Shopify with causing a 56% increase in doll sales. Mattel, a California-based toy manufacturing company, expects property growth in the upcoming months and years.
According to Noogata, “Barbie” has been the search term with the highest search count on Amazon during the past two months. “Barbie” was followed by the search terms “Barbie dolls,” “Barbie clothes for women,” “Barbie shirts for women,” and “Barbie dream house.”
Although not being featured in the movie, “Barbie Crocs” was the term with the highest search volume increase with a growth of 10,000% in July, according to Noogata.
Birkenstocks, however, were featured in the movie, and are selling fast as fans want to copy Barbie’s final outfit.
Interestingly, out of the five most popular “Barbie” items on Amazon, just one was a classic doll.
“After looking at the total search volume for ‘Barbie’ branded searches, it’s clear to see that clothing is the unexpected winner when it comes to consumer search,” stated the director of products at Noogata, Jaron Seijffers.
Shopify is also experiencing increased sales thanks to the popularity of “Barbie.”
“Across the board, we’re seeing doll sales up 56%,” Harley Finkelstein, president of Shopify, told Insider.
Notably, in addition to new dolls, vintage and collectible Barbie sales are also up, according to USA Today.
In the previous month, Mattel caught attention by reporting a decline in Barbie doll sales during the second quarter. However, the full picture reveals that the 7% drop was mainly linked to adjusting promotions to match the movie release. Mattel expects Barbie to experience substantial growth in the upcoming months.
After just over two weeks from opening, the Barbie movie made $1 billion at the box office. Barbie-themed products will most likely continue attracting attention as customers can continue seeing the movie.
