Users of many third-party Twitter apps are reportedly having trouble logging in and viewing their Twitter feeds. Two of these apps, Tweetbot and Twitterrific, announced that they’re aware of the problem but don’t know the reason behind it and haven’t been contacted by the social media company.
Creators of these apps also expressed their confusion on their Mastodon accounts.
‘’Did Twitter just kill 3rd party clients? Can’t login with Twitterrific at the moment.’’ wrote Sean Heber, developer of Twitterrific. ‘’We’ll have to give it some time and see if this is a real policy thing or just some kind of outage. We don’t know any more than anyone else. 🤷♂️’’ he later added.
“I’m hoping whatever is going on at Twitter is just some automated spam protection bot that is incorrectly suspending proper apps,” said Paul Haddad of Tweetbot. ‘’Unfortunately I don’t have many contacts at Twitter anymore so doubt I’ll get any kind of definitive answer soon.’’
In addition to these apps, other Twitter clients like Echofon, Twitpane, Feather, Talon, Fenix are also reportedly experiencing an outage. While neither Elon Musk nor Twitter has shared any statement about the issue, it is thought to be caused by a change in Twitter’s API.
In mid-December, the company said that it would continue to invest in its Developer Program and Twitter API.
