Epic Games has made a significant announcement during its State of Unreal event at the Game Developers Conference (GDC): the Epic Games Store is set to make its debut on mobile platforms, including both iOS and Android, by the end of 2024.
Steve Allison, the general manager of the Epic Games Store, emphasized the company’s tireless efforts in combating what it perceives as gatekeeping practices on mobile platforms, a pointed reference to the likes of Apple and Google.
The forthcoming launch of the Epic Games Store on mobile devices heralds the arrival of the first-ever games-centric, multiplatform marketplace, anchored by players’ Epic accounts. Alongside the iconic Fortnite, the store will feature a curated selection of third-party partners. In tandem with the store’s rollout, Epic will introduce new self-publishing tools tailored specifically for mobile developers.
Developers entering the Epic Games Store ecosystem can anticipate terms that echo those established on the PC platform. This includes an industry-disrupting revenue split of 88/12 in favor of developers, a stark contrast to the 30% commission typically levied by the App Store and Google Play.
Additionally, games featuring in-app purchases will have the freedom to utilize their preferred payment service provider. Furthermore, exclusive deals await developers, including a 0% royalty fee for titles built on the Unreal Engine and enhanced incentives for games launching exclusively on the Epic Games Store.
Epic’s data from the end of 2023 underscored the monumental success of the Epic Games Store on PC. With over 270 million player accounts and 75 million monthly active users, players collectively spent a staggering $950 million over the course of the year.
