AltStore PAL expands with third-party iOS apps following DMA

AltStore has launched its first set of third-party app, comes shortly after the company unveiled an enhanced version of its app marketplace in response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates Apple to accommodate alternative app distribution platforms.

The initial offerings in AltStore PAL include several noteworthy apps. Among them is iTorrent, a torrenting app that enables users to download peer-to-peer (P2P) files directly to their devices. Also featured is qBitControl, a remote client for managing the desktop version of qBittorrent from an iOS device. The lineup is further complemented by PeopleDrop, a social discovery platform designed to help users connect with others nearby through geolocation.

Another notable app in the initial batch is UTM SE, an emulator that allows users to run classic software and retro games on their iOS devices. Unlike the other apps, UTM SE is also available on the official iOS App Store, highlighting the diverse range of applications now accessible through AltStore PAL.

AltStore has assured users that all included apps have been rigorously vetted to meet safety and security standards. To access these apps, users can add them from the “Sources” screen within the AltStore PAL app. Once added, the apps will appear in the “Browse” tab, ready for download and installation.

The rollout of these third-party apps is a direct result of the DMA, which requires Apple to support alternative app stores by providing necessary APIs. This legislative change is paving the way for a more competitive app store ecosystem, offering developers new opportunities to reach users outside of the traditional App Store framework.

To use AltStore PAL, iPhone users need to be running iOS 17.4 or later. The service is exclusive to the European Union and requires a nominal annual subscription fee of €1.50, which helps cover the costs imposed by Apple. Existing subscribers can seamlessly update to the latest version without incurring additional fees by navigating to Settings > App Installation on their devices.
