Tech giant Google said on Wednesday that it’d freeze hiring for two weeks to ‘review headcount needs’. The announcement comes a week after the company said it would slow down the hiring process until next year.
“We’ll use this time to review our headcount needs and align on a new set of prioritized Staffing Requests for the next three months,” said Prabhakar Raghavan, a senior vice president at Google, in an email to employees reported by the Information.
Raghavan said that while the decision won’t affect the existing offers, the company won’t be posting any new openings for the following two weeks.
Last week, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that the search giant hired 10,000 employees in Q2 2022 alone, adding that it’d now slow down the process for the rest of the year.
“As Sundar announced, we are slowing hiring for the rest of the year,’’ a Google spokesperson told the Verge. ‘’In line with that, we’re pausing most new offers for two weeks to enable teams to prioritize their roles and hiring plans for the rest of the year.”

In addition to Google, the global economic downturn has led many tech companies to slow down or freeze their hiring processes to cope with the rising costs. Earlier this month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company cut its hiring plans and said, ‘’…this might be one of the worst downturns that we’ve seen in recent history’’.
Meanwhile, Apple said it won’t fill certain roles in 2023, Twitter laid off 30% of its recruitment team, Pokemon GO-maker Niantic laid off 8% of its staff & cancelled four projects, Spotify slowed down hiring.
Other companies that announced lay-offs or hiring slowdown include Tesla, Netflix, Microsoft, Unity, PayPal, Coinbase, Applovin & Adjust and Uber.
