A new study from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) revealed that 52.4 million Americans aged 50 or older now play video games at least once a month, despite feeling overlooked by the gaming industry. (via Axios)
Those older than 50 are more willing to spend both their time and money on video games, the survey found. In 2022, this age group spent an average of 12 hours per week playing video games, and around $49 on them within a span of six months. In addition, the AARP said that 45% of those older than 50, 52% of whom are female, play titles on a daily basis.
According to the research, more than half of 50+ gamers in the United States use their smartphones to play games, mostly puzzle, card and word titles. Other devices they prefer include Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Wii.
When it comes to why they play, the main reason for 86% of 50-plus year olds is to have fun. Among other motivators are relaxing (79%), staying mentally sharp (78%), being challenged or solving problems (74%), reducing stress (71%), and passing the time (70%).
Nevertheless, the majority of older gamers (69%) think that game developers build their titles without taking their needs and interests into consideration.
“Our research shows, however, that almost 70% do not feel like the games are made with them in mind,’’ said Maura White, the AARP’s Director of Gaming & Community. “They would like the video gaming industry to create games and features designed to onboard easily, play consistently, and stay challenged,” she added.
