Popular caller ID & call blocking app Truecaller is bringing its solutions to WhatsApp and other messaging apps to help users identify and prevent potential spam calls, as reported by Reuters.

Truecaller CEO and co-founder Alan Mamedi announced that the feature is currently in beta but will be expanded to other countries later this month.

According to a previous report by the company, countries like India have seen a significant surge in telemarketing and scamming calls, which resulted in users there getting nearly 17 spam calls every month on average.

Earlier this month, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) introduced new regulations that will now require telecom operators such as Jio and Airtel to start using artificial intelligence filters to block spam calls and messages. Truecaller has confirmed that it is in talks with telecom operators to team up on such a solution.

Over the last two weeks, we have seen a spike in user reports from India about spam calls over WhatsApp,” said Mamedi, adding that it’s a new tactic for telemarketers to call users on online services.

Truecaller has a total of 350 million users around the world, with 250 million of them are based in India, where WhatsApp is the most popular messaging application. The company’s integration with WhatsApp and other messaging apps could be highly useful in protecting users from unwanted spam calls.
