Amazon is reportedly creating a standalone app where it plans to offer live sports content, sources familiar with the matter told the Information (via Reuters).
The mover reflects the tech giant’s continuous investments in its Prime Video service and sports programming. It already holds the streaming rights to National Football League’s Thursday Night Football and Premier League soccer in the United Kingdom.
According to the sources, while Amazon had discussions regarding the standalone app, there’s currently no certainty as to when it will be released. The company also may not proceed with it at all, they added.
The report comes at a time Amazon is making significant changes to its business and shifting its focus on money-making units. Last month, it reportedly laid off 10,000 employees, or 3% of its workforce, citing the economic uncertainty.
During an interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin of The New York Times that took place last month, Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy said that live sports are “a unique asset” and they would keep investing in it.
Meanwhile, Google-owned YouTube also recently announced a multi-year agreement with the National Football League for the exclusive right to stream NFL Sunday Ticket on its platform in the United States.
