Pavel Durov, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of messaging app Telegram, said on Thursday that Meta’s WhatsApp has been a ‘’surveillance tool’’ for 13 years.
‘’You can use any messaging app you like, but do stay away from WhatsApp,’’ wrote Pavel in his Telegram channel. (See the full message below.)
His words arrive weeks after WhatsApp announced a security vulnerability in September that could allow hackers to gain full control of users’ devices through remote code execution during video calls.
While WhatsApp said that it fixed the vulnerability with a new app update, it wasn’t enough to calm Durov down. He said that every year there is another WhatsApp vulnerability that puts users at risk, so it’s quite likely for another one to exist in the app right now.
He added that the purpose of his statement is not to promote Telegram, saying it already has more than 700 million users and 2 million daily signups so doesn’t need any extra promotion.
