Apple has temporarily stopped showing gambling advertisements in App Store’s individual product pages after coming under fire by many app developers.
The tech giant launched two new ad slots in its app marketplace earlier this week, allowing app owners to get their products featured in the ‘’You Might Also Like’’ section in app pages and the ‘’Today’’ tab located in the main page.
Since it also lets them choose a specific category for their campaigns, this led many product pages to be filled with ads that promoted gambling apps.
Shortly after the launch of the new ad placements, many developers expressed their concerns that the ads could harm their reputation. Some of them also said that Apple is moving away from its original advertising principles just to boost its ad revenue even more.
Following the complaints, Apple told MacRumors on Wednesday that it has ‘’paused ads related to gambling and a few other categories on App Store product pages.’’
However, the company did not provide further details on how it plans to handle the issue in the long term.
Apple’s new ad slots arrived months after Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple wants to increase its annual ad revenue to double digits. He also wrote that the iPhone-maker is planning to start offering its Search Ads in Maps and Books apps as well.
In addition, Digiday recently reported that the company could start showing in Apple TV+ soon, likely via an ad-supported subscription plan.
