Meta has officially rolled out its highly anticipated API for Threads, providing developers with the tools to build innovative experiences around the platform. Mark Zuckerberg announced the API launch on social media, stating, “The Threads API is now widely available and coming to more of you soon.” This marks a significant milestone for the platform, opening up numerous possibilities for developers to engage with Threads on a deeper level.
In a detailed blog post, Threads engineer Jesse Chen outlined the capabilities of the new API. With this tool, developers can publish posts, retrieve their own content, and implement advanced reply management features. This means users can now hide, unhide, or respond to specific replies more efficiently. Additionally, the API allows developers to access detailed analytics, including metrics like views, likes, replies, reposts, and quotes at both the media and account levels.
The journey to this launch began in October 2023, when Instagram head Adam Mosseri first revealed that the company was working on the Threads API. Initially launched in a closed beta with partners such as Sprinklr, Sprout Social, Social News Desk, Hootsuite, and Techmeme, Meta promised a wider release by June. True to their word, the company has now made the API available to all developers.
“Threads is a fast-growing network that reflects where social is headed, and the capabilities that this API integration makes possible for our customers is taking Hootsuite’s mission of unlocking social relationships to a new level. I’m excited to watch this integration drive our customers’ social media performance,” said Elina Vilk, Chief Marketing Officer, Hootsuite.
To facilitate adoption, Meta has also released a reference open-source app on GitHub, giving developers a practical resource to experiment with the new API. This comes at a time when third-party developers have faced significant challenges, with platforms like Twitter (now X) and Reddit imposing strict limitations on API access.
