Fortnite is returning to iOS in Europe thanks to the EU’s DMA

Following Apple’s recent announcement about allowing third-party app stores for iOS users in the European Union, Epic Games has confirmed its plans to bring Fortnite back to the iPhone and iPad in Europe through a new Epic mobile games store. 

This marks the official return of Fortnite to Apple’s platform since its removal in August 2020 due to a dispute over payment methods. 

Epic Games has provided limited details about its upcoming store launch, stating that it is scheduled for later this year. The store’s availability will be limited to regions in Europe covered by the Digital Markets Act, and Fortnite is set to be accessible through this platform.

With the EU’s new Digital Markets Act coming into effect on March 7, developers now have the option to handle payments and distribute apps independently of the App Store. Despite this positive development, Epic Games’ founder and CEO, Tim Sweeney, criticized Apple for introducing what he referred to as “new Junk Fees on downloads and new Apple taxes on payments they don’t process.” Sweeney expressed discontent with Apple’s control over competition and terms in the app market, emphasizing the need for more transparent and fair practices.
