Meta’s Threads has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 200 million active users. This comes just a day after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at the achievement during the company’s Q2 2024 earnings call.
The official confirmation came from Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who shared the news in a post on Threads. He celebrated the rapid growth of the platform, stating, “I’m excited to share that we crossed the 200M milestone on @threads. My hope is that Threads can inspire ideas that bring people together and this amazing community continues to grow.”
Threads has shown remarkable growth since its launch in July 2023. The text-focused social media platform reached 150 million users by April 2024, and by its one-year anniversary in July, it had grown to 175 million users. The platform’s growth continued to accelerate, reaching the 200 million user mark just a month later.
For context, Threads’ primary competitor, X (formerly known as Twitter), reported over 600 million monthly users in May, according to owner Elon Musk. The decline of Twitter under Musk’s leadership, marked by erratic changes that alienated many long-time users, spurred Meta to create Threads as a viable alternative for online discussions.
Zuckerberg has high aspirations for Threads, previously suggesting that it has a “good chance” of becoming a platform with over a billion users. During the latest earnings call, he expressed optimism about Threads’ trajectory, noting, “We’re making steady progress towards building what looks like it’s going to be another major social app. And we are seeing deeper engagement. I’m quite pleased with the trajectory here.”
