Snapchat Users Created Over a Trillion Selfies in 2024

Snapchat has revealed that its users generated more than one trillion selfie Snaps during 2024, highlighting the app’s central role in how its community communicates and shares content. The figure comes from the company’s latest usage report and underscores the platform’s scale among younger audiences.

For comparison, Apple recently disclosed that iPhone users collectively took around 500 billion selfies in the same period. Snapchat’s total therefore represents more than double that amount, suggesting the app’s camera-first design and tools are driving far higher engagement than standard phone cameras.

The company, which says it now serves over 930 million people globally, attributes much of this activity to its augmented reality and artificial intelligence–powered Lenses. These features range from long-standing effects like Dog Ears and Crying Face to newer tools such as the Imagine Lens, which generates visuals from text prompts. Snapchat frames these creative effects as an evolving form of digital self-expression that has become embedded in everyday communication.

Despite these engagement numbers, Snapchat continues to face challenges in sustaining growth in its most established markets. Daily active user numbers in the U.S. and European Union have shown signs of stalling, raising questions about the platform’s ability to expand its appeal beyond younger demographics. Analysts note that while the app dominates among teens and young adults, retaining users as they age into different life stages remains a concern.
