Meta’s social media platform, Threads, has been making substantial strides since its launch, now boasting an impressive 275 million monthly active users. This figure, shared by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in the company’s Q3 earnings call, marks a significant jump from the 200 million reported in August. The platform’s rapid growth, fueled partly by its stance as an alternative to X (formerly Twitter), could see Threads become a formidable player in social media marketing, albeit currently only through organic reach.

In the first nine months, Threads saw a gradual increase in users, reaching 175 million at an average growth rate of 8.3 million new users each month. However, the past three months have demonstrated a growth acceleration, with Threads adding 100 million new users—over triple its earlier rate. As more people engage with the platform and exclusive content is shared, user numbers continue to climb, signaling a significant momentum shift.
Threads’ growth has also been bolstered by changes within X. With political discussions increasingly shaping the atmosphere on X, Meta has positioned Threads as an escape from the politicized content. Musk’s high-profile shifts in X’s moderation policies, including increased reliance on Community Notes, have intensified political content, driving some users to explore alternative spaces for more casual and non-political interaction. Threads has become an appealing option for users seeking a less politicized social media experience.
Nonetheless, some industry analysts suggest that Threads’ non-political stance could become a barrier in fully replacing X in the real-time discourse arena. While Meta has created Threads as a versatile platform, it may need to find a middle ground to foster diverse, trending conversations without alienating users looking to avoid heated political debates. Yet, with current growth rates placing Threads on track to potentially rival X’s 500 million monthly user base by mid-2025, the platform’s trajectory is encouraging.
As Threads grows, advertisers are watching closely. Though Meta doesn’t anticipate revenue contributions from Threads in 2025, ad placements on Threads could become a reality sooner than expected. Some researchers have spotted evidence suggesting that Meta is laying the groundwork for advertising within Threads, with ad placements likely available when the platform reaches a broader user base.
