In March 2024, miHoYo’s Honkai: Star Rail continued to assert its dominance over its predecessor, Genshin Impact, widening the revenue gap significantly compared to February.
According to data from AppMagic revealed by Pocketgamer.biz, Honkai: Star Rail generated over double the revenue of Genshin Impact on mobile last month, bringing in a staggering $118.3 million compared to Genshin’s $58.5 million. This marks Genshin Impact’s worst full month on record by AppMagic estimates, showing a decline in monthly revenue throughout the year so far.
For Honkai: Star Rail, March 2024 represented its best month for in-app revenue since August 2023, when it brought in $118.4 million. However, neither month has matched the game’s most lucrative period just after launch, when it generated $208.9 million in May 2023.
The release of Version 2.1 on March 27th, 2024, brought new characters, missions, and events to Honkai: Star Rail, resulting in the game’s best-performing day of the month, with $12.6 million in revenue compared to $3.9 million the day prior. This highlights the significant influence that a new version update can have on player spending, as the game maintained a stable, higher revenue for the remainder of the month.
Similarly, Genshin Impact saw a boost in revenue following the launch of Version 4.5 on March 13th, 2024, which brought in $7.1 million in player spending on its best day of the month. However, this boost tapered off after roughly a week, with the game recalibrating to just over $1 million per day on average.
