The Worst Games of 2023

2023, which we are now slowly preparing to leave behind, was an unforgettable year for the players. 2023, where there are many anticipated and quality games almost every month, hosted great games such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Besides these games, there were also games that we would not even want to mention. Here are the worst games of 2023, according to Metacritic scores.

The Worst Games of 2023

Ravenbound

Platform: PC

Genre: Roguelite, Open World, Fighting

Metascore: 54

Regrettably, our roguelite game, deeply influenced by Scandinavian mythology, struggles to advance beyond its early access appearance. In contrast to the enticing trailer, the gameplay primarily involves pursuing adversaries in desolate landscapes and falls short of expectations in terms of action. The cumbersome and occasionally flawed combat mechanics add to the challenges faced by the player.

Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains

Platform: PC

Genre: Role-playing

Metascore: 52

Despite the pixel art graphics and turn-based combat system, this RPG holds promising potential, but unfortunately, it falls short due to issues like optimization problems. The game, appearing rushed in its current state, takes an intriguing approach to puzzles, incorporating an excessive amount of mathematics, almost feeling like an unexpected test for the player.

Unholy

Platform: PC

Genre: Action

Metascore: 52

Unholy, which does not have any remarkable aspects that distinguish it from its similar ones, actually does a bad job with its atmosphere. Although it manages to attract people with its story at first, it quickly becomes boring after that. When cumbersome action mechanics are involved, the game manages to get into the worst games of 2023 list by getting 6.5 points from the users.

Crime Boss: Rockay City

Platform: PC

Genre: FPS, Adventure

Metascore: 52

Even though the game is like a parade of stars, unfortunately this alone is not enough to make it fun. The production, in which we try to establish a criminal empire, does not add anything new to the usual things such as robbing banks and getting into shootouts. When errors that make gameplay impossible or even terminate the game are added to all this, things become even worse.

Gangs of Sherwood

Platform: PC

Genre: Shooter, Adventure

Metascore: 45

Although the game, which set out to combine the Robin Hood legend with the steampunk theme with an interesting idea, is successful in this, it is very difficult to say the same for the technical part of the game. While users complain a lot about technical issues, the fact that even the most basic things such as pressing buttons are not in the game makes Gangs of Sherwood among the worst games of 2023.

Quantum Error

Platform: PlayStation 5

Genre: Shooter, Adventure

Metascore: 41

Quantum Error, which managed to get 3.3 points from users, excites people at first with its cosmic horror elements, but the effect of this situation fades away after the first clumsy fight sequence. When you add things like strange CGI and the game’s performance problems, the game cannot save itself from being on this list.

Testament: The Order of High Human

Platform: PC

Genre: Role-playing, Action, Adventure

Metascore: 41

Even though the game trailer makes you say ‘well, I think something above average is coming’, this game is proof of why we should not be fooled by the trailers. Clunky combat mechanics and boring puzzles that are far behind the times are far from hiding the disaster that occurs when trying to create a fantastic RPG and providing an entertaining game. If you are a player who likes to spend time in fantasy worlds, it may interest you, but it is possible to find much, much better games than this game in its genre and price.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Platform: PlayStation 5

Genre: Action, Adventure

Metascore: 34

The game, which occupied the agenda of the gaming world from the development process to its release, showed that it could not fulfill any of the promises it made with its release. Unfortunately, the production, which is about one of the key characters of a legendary series such as The Lord of the Rings, can only be played for laughs at most, because it is a big mistake to expect more than animations that make you feel like you are in a horror movie, errors that make the game unplayable, and a ridiculous story presentation. Let us also remind you that the developer of the game apologized after the production was released and announced that they would not make another game.

Greyhill Incident

Platform: PlayStation 5

Genre: Action, Adventure

Metascore: 37

Greyhill Incident, which managed to get only 1 point from the players, is a great example of wasted potential. While trying to combine classic horror game clichés with a story that might not be bad, the game wastes this story and manages to become the second worst game of 2023 by making it feel like a boring walking simulation rather than a horror game. We’re not even talking about bugs and bugs.

Flashback 2

Platform: PlayStation 5

Genre: Action, Adventure

Metascore: 37

The game, which wants to continue the reputation of the legendary video game Flashback, released in 1992, is a bad enough production to tarnish this legend, let alone being an average game. With its boring story presentation, major technical errors, clunky combat, and game design that is way behind the times, Flashback 2 is like a black mark that both players and critics will want to erase from their minds.
