Sony announces Discord integration into PlayStation consoles

Sony has announced a new partnership with Discord to integrate the popular voice, video & text chat app into PlayStation consoles starting next year. The company has also made a minority investment in Discord as part of the company’s Series H funding round.

‘’Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network.’’ said Jim Ryan, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, in a blog post.

‘’Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.’’

Used by over 140 million active users every month, Discord is quite popular among gamers.

Microsoft was reportedly in talks to acquire the app for over $10 billion in previous months. However, last month, sources familiar with the matter said that Discord ended the talks and plans to continue as a standalone company for now.

The free-to-use app generated $130 million in 2020 and tripled its revenue during the pandemic without showing any ads
