Google introduces Game Trials and AI Sidekick as Play expands toward cross-platform gaming

At the 2026 edition of the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Google outlined a series of updates aimed at expanding the gaming capabilities of Google Play, introducing features that allow users to test paid games before purchasing, access titles across devices, and receive in-game assistance through AI-powered tools.

Game Trials Aim to Lower Barriers to Paid Games

Among the most notable additions is Game Trials, a feature that allows players to test the full version of certain paid games for a limited time before deciding whether to buy them. The trials appear directly on a game’s store listing through a “Try” button and will initially roll out to select mobile titles.

If users choose to purchase the game after the trial period, their progress carries over to the paid version. Google said the feature is built directly into the Android App Bundle, enabling developers to offer trial access without maintaining a separate demo version. Support for Game Trials on Google Play Games for PC is expected to arrive later.

Single Purchase Across Mobile and PC

Google is also introducing a “Buy once, play anywhere” pricing model, allowing users to access both mobile and PC versions of select games with a single purchase. Early support includes titles such as the Reigns series, OTTTD, and Dungeon Clawler.

The move is part of a broader effort to bridge Android and PC gaming. Players will now find a new PC section within the Play Store’s Games tab, which highlights titles optimized for Windows PCs. Users can add games to a wishlist and receive notifications when prices drop.

Expansion of Paid and Indie Titles

Alongside new purchasing features, Google said it is expanding its catalog of paid and indie games available on Play. Upcoming titles expected to arrive on the platform include Moonlight Peaks, Sledding Game, 9 Kings, Potion Craft, and Low-Budget Repairs.

Through Google Play Games, players will be able to access these titles across devices while synchronizing progress via their Gamer Profile.

AI-Powered Play Games Sidekick Rolls Out

Google also began rolling out Play Games Sidekick, an in-game overlay first previewed in 2025. The feature provides quick access to gameplay tools such as screenshot capture, screen recording, and Do Not Disturb mode while playing.

Sidekick also introduces AI-generated gameplay tips based on a player’s activity, along with access to achievements, rewards, and quest progress. The overlay currently supports more than 90 games.

In future updates, Google plans to integrate Gemini Live, allowing players to share their screen and receive AI-driven assistance while playing.

Community and Discovery Features Added

Beyond gameplay features, Google is adding Community Posts within Play Store listings. The tool enables players to ask questions, share strategies, and discuss games directly inside the app marketplace rather than relying on external forums.

Wishlist functionality is also being expanded so users can track games and receive notifications when discounts become available.

Part of a Broader Shift in Play’s Role

The updates reflect Google’s broader effort to position Google Play as more than a mobile app marketplace, integrating discovery, community interaction, and cross-platform gameplay within a single ecosystem.

The company said its Play Games Services now reaches more than 600 million monthly users, while ongoing initiatives such as the Level Up developer program are designed to encourage features like cloud saves, achievements, and cross-device play ahead of upcoming platform milestones in 2026.
