Epic Games has announced a significant strategic shift by pulling Fortnite and its other titles from mobile app stores. This move comes as the company gears up to launch its own digital storefront on iOS and Android platforms.
In a detailed statement, Epic Games explained that it would be ending distribution partnerships with mobile stores that it believes function as “rent collectors without competing robustly and serving all developers fairly.” This decision is part of Epic’s broader strategy to challenge the prevailing market dynamics and establish a more equitable platform for game developers.
One of the immediate actions taken by Epic is the removal of its popular games, including Fortnite, from the Samsung Galaxy store. The publisher cited Samsung’s default blocking of side-loading as a primary reason for this decision. Epic also pointed to Google’s alleged attempts to influence Samsung to limit competition in the Android app distribution market, which further solidified its resolve to withdraw from these platforms.
Looking ahead, Epic Games plans to make its mobile titles available on AltStore for iOS users in the European Union, with additional availability on at least two other third-party stores in the near future. This move aligns with Epic’s vision of creating a more open and competitive market for mobile applications.
The new Epic Games Store for mobile will mirror the terms of its PC digital store. Developers will be subject to a 12% fee for processing payments, with an option to use third-party payment systems without incurring any fees. This model aims to provide a more developer-friendly alternative to the current offerings from major app stores.
