Monopoly Go! breaks mobile gaming records with $5B in just two years

Scopely’s Monopoly Go! has officially crossed the $5 billion mark in gross bookings just two years after its global release, making it the fastest mobile game in history to achieve this milestone. The previous record-holder, Genshin Impact, took 40 months to reach the same revenue threshold, underscoring the exceptional performance of Monopoly Go! in a highly competitive market.

In a statement released on May 1, Scopely confirmed the achievement, attributing the success to its vibrant global player base and an expanding development team. Over the last 24 months, players have completed six billion game boards, destroyed 80 million landmarks, and sent 450 million friend invites. The game has also fostered a highly active community, with 20 million users regularly engaging through its social channels.

“To provide context: over the past decade, more than 1.4 million mobile titles have launched globally. Among them, Monopoly Go! reached this financial milestone in just 24 months—significantly ahead of the previous benchmark of 40 months,” said Massimo Maietti, Scopely’s President of Games, in a celebratory blog post.

Originally developed by a small core team in California, the game now benefits from a global workforce of over 500 developers across multiple countries. This growth has fueled continuous innovation, with Scopely promising a future filled with new board designs, expanded tile functionalities, enhanced PvP (player vs. player) mechanics, tournaments, mini-games, and themed events. Additionally, the company plans to evolve the in-game sticker system to deepen player engagement.

As Monopoly Go! enters its third year, Scopely remains committed to delivering what it describes as a “best-in-class, deeply socially connected, and creatively engaging experience” for its players. The game’s meteoric rise not only signals a major shift in mobile gaming dynamics but also sets a new standard for what’s possible in the industry.
