In response to an interim order from the Turkish competition authority, Meta Platforms has announced the temporary shutdown of its social media platform Threads in Türkiye, effective from April 29. The decision comes as part of compliance efforts with the authority’s directives.
However, Meta assures users that the suspension of Threads will not affect its other social media platforms and services, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, which will continue to operate as usual in Türkiye. The company made this announcement via a blog post, highlighting its commitment to adhering to regulatory requirements while maintaining uninterrupted service for its users.
The move follows the Turkish competition authority’s imposition of an interim measure on Meta Platforms, aimed at impeding data sharing between Instagram and Threads. The authority initiated an investigation into potential abuse of Meta’s dominant market position, prompting the regulatory intervention. By temporarily halting Threads’ operations in Türkiye, Meta aims to cooperate with the ongoing investigation and address concerns raised by the competition authority regarding data sharing practices between its social media platforms.
