Match Group has agreed to settle a lawsuit brought by the Federal Trade Commission over allegations that its OkCupid platform shared user data with a third party without proper disclosure.
The case centers on claims that OkCupid provided an external company with access to sensitive user information, including nearly three million photos, as well as demographic and location data. Regulators alleged that this data sharing occurred without informing users and contradicted the platform’s stated privacy policies.
According to the complaint, the third party—identified as a facial recognition technology firm—was not a formal service provider or business partner. Authorities also stated that no clear contractual restrictions were placed on how the data could be used once shared.
The FTC further alleged that the companies misrepresented their data handling practices and, at times, denied involvement when reports about the data transfer surfaced. The agency said the actions violated commitments made to users regarding how their personal information would be collected, used, and disclosed.
Under the terms of the settlement, Match Group and its affiliated entities are prohibited from misrepresenting their privacy practices. The agreement requires the company to certify compliance with these obligations, and future violations could result in financial penalties. The settlement remains subject to court approval.
