Apple generated nearly $900M from GenAI apps as ChatGPT dominated App Store revenue

Apple generated an estimated $900 million in commissions from generative AI apps on its App Store in 2025, highlighting the growing commercial impact of AI-driven consumer software on mobile platforms.

According to data from AppMagic (shared via WSJ), revenue tied to generative AI apps increased sharply throughout the year, rising from approximately $35 million in January to a peak of $101 million in August before moderating in the following months. The surge was largely driven by subscription-based services, particularly ChatGPT, which accounted for nearly three-quarters of total App Store commissions from the category.

Other AI apps contributed at a smaller scale, with Grok representing a limited share of the overall revenue mix. The concentration of earnings among a small number of leading apps underscores the current market structure within the generative AI segment.

The figures point to Apple’s role as a key distribution layer for AI services, even as it has yet to introduce a directly competing product in the same category. Instead, the company has focused on integrating AI capabilities into its ecosystem through partnerships and on-device processing strategies.

Reports indicate that Apple is working with Google to incorporate AI models such as Gemini into future iterations of its voice assistant, Siri. While financial details remain undisclosed, earlier estimates suggested the agreement could be valued at around $1 billion annually.

Apple’s approach contrasts with competitors investing heavily in large-scale AI infrastructure. Rather than building frontier models at the same pace as rivals, the company is prioritizing hardware integration and leveraging user data within its ecosystem to support AI functionality.

The App Store revenue trend indicates that, despite not leading in model development, Apple continues to benefit financially from the rapid adoption of generative AI applications distributed through its platform.
