EU App Store now requires developers to display public address and phone number

First announced back in August, developers distributing apps in the European Union now face new requirements as part of the region’s Digital Services Act (DSA). As of October 17, 2024, developers are mandated to provide a public address and phone number, which will be visible to users on the EU App Store. This rule, part of the DSA’s broader efforts to increase transparency and accountability in online platforms, has caused ripples in the developer community, with many expressing concerns over the new obligations.

The DSA defines any developer who generates revenue through their app as a “trader.” This includes not only developers who sell apps directly but also those earning money through in-app purchases or advertisements. Developers distributing free apps without ads are exempt from this requirement. For those impacted, the new rule stipulates that a public address, phone number, and email address must be provided to Apple before new apps or updates can be submitted for review. Individual developers, in particular, are required to provide this personal information, while organizations must only submit their phone number and email address.

This change is part of a wider push to make online platforms more transparent, with the contact details displayed directly below app descriptions in the EU App Store. Apple has made it clear that it is following EU regulations, leaving little flexibility for developers. While some developers are upset about having to disclose personal contact details, Apple has no choice but to enforce the rule to comply with the DSA.

The deadline for compliance is February 17, 2025. Developers who fail to submit the required information by that date will see their apps removed from the App Store in the EU. Until their trader status is provided and verified, developers will be unable to make app updates or submissions, potentially disrupting user access to important app features and fixes.
