Getir, an instant grocery delivery company that started to serve in Istanbul in July 2015, today announced the acquisition of FreshDirect, an online grocery company based in New York City, from Ahold Delhaize USA, the largest grocery retail group on the East Coast.
Getir says the acquisition will create substantial synergies between the startup and FreshDirect, underscoring its strategic aspirations for expansion in the United States.
Founded in 2002, FreshDirect ranks as one of the pioneers among online-only grocery delivery providers. Upon the completion of the acquisition, FreshDirect will maintain its brand identity and continue its operations from its Bronx facility in New York City. Customers of both FreshDirect and Getir will experience no changes and continue to receive the same level of service as they have in the past, Getir said.
“FreshDirect will enable Getir to further increase the quality and breadth of its product range, especially regarding fresh products, making it even more attractive to its New York customers,” the company said in a press release.
Getir, founded in 2015 and currently operates in five countries, reached a valuation as significant as $11.8 billion in March 2022, in a $768 million Series E funding round. However, in more recent developments, in September of this year, reports indicated that the company was in the process of raising $500 million at a reduced valuation of $2.5 billion, information corroborated by sources closely connected to the company.
“FreshDirect will leverage Getir’s technology and operational footprint to offer faster services to its loyal customer base, which will also benefit from easy access to Getir’s quick convenience service,” Getir said.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
