In a recent court hearing tied to an ongoing antitrust case, Google disclosed that its Gemini AI platform currently reaches approximately 350 million users each month. While this marks substantial growth for the AI initiative, the numbers still fall short when stacked against competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Meta AI.
The figures, which surfaced during a presentation by Google, indicated that Gemini had also reached 35 million daily active users as of March 2025. This is a notable jump from just a few months prior—in October 2024—when daily and monthly users stood at 9 million and 90 million, respectively.
These usage statistics emerged in the broader context of the U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust case against Google. The DOJ argues that Google’s dominance in the search market could give it an unfair advantage as it expands into artificial intelligence. However, the data presented paints a different picture—one in which Google is actually lagging behind its major AI rivals.
According to reports from The Information and TechCrunch, Meta’s AI assistant had amassed close to 500 million monthly users by late 2024, while OpenAI claims over 400 million weekly active users for ChatGPT. These metrics highlight the competitive gap Google faces in the AI race.
It remains unclear how user engagement is measured across different platforms, especially considering Google’s deep integration of Gemini AI into services like Gmail and Google Workspace. If those users are excluded from the count, Gemini’s reach could be significantly underestimated. Regardless, the court disclosure suggests that while Google is growing fast, it still has considerable ground to cover to catch up with its AI competitors.
