India’s mobile app economy crossed a new monetization threshold in Q1 2026, generating more than $300 million in in-app purchase revenue, a 33% year-over-year increase, according to data from Sensor Tower. The growth comes as the market shifts from scale-driven expansion to a more efficiency-focused model centered on engagement and revenue per user.

Total downloads reached 6.2 billion during the quarter, with non-gaming apps accounting for 72% of installs. However, the more significant shift is on the revenue side, where non-gaming categories are increasingly driving monetization gains.

Non-Gaming Apps Lead Revenue Expansion

Non-gaming apps generated over $200 million in IAP revenue in Q1, rising 44% year over year and setting a new high for the segment. Growth was led by generative AI tools and short-form drama platforms, both of which saw rapid user adoption and increased willingness to pay.

Generative AI apps recorded a 69% increase in downloads, with leading platforms moving beyond utility into premium subscription models. At the same time, short drama apps saw a 403% surge in downloads, supported by aggressive user acquisition strategies and high ad spend, particularly on social platforms.

The revenue concentration remains strongest in video entertainment and utility categories, which dominate the top-grossing rankings. This reflects a broader shift toward content and services that combine engagement with recurring monetization.

Gaming Holds Scale, Improves Monetization

Mobile gaming downloads remained stable at over 1.7 billion in Q1 2026, while revenue grew 15% year over year—significantly outperforming the global growth rate of 0.4%. Despite this, the segment shows signs of maturity, with growth concentrated in specific genres rather than across the board.

Top download charts continue to be led by established titles, indicating strong retention driven by localization and live operations strategies. Seasonal events and culturally relevant content remain key drivers of user acquisition, particularly around major sports events.

Puzzle Emerges as a Revenue Driver

Within gaming, puzzle titles delivered the strongest monetization gains. The category recorded a 78% year-over-year increase in revenue, making it the second-largest genre by revenue after shooters.

This growth reflects a broader trend toward accessible, retention-driven gameplay combined with consistent live ops execution. Titles leveraging events, progression systems, and in-game economies are capturing a larger share of user spend in an increasingly competitive market.

Meanwhile, strategy and mid-core titles continue to rely on live events and localized content to sustain engagement. New entrants that successfully implement these mechanics are able to scale into top revenue rankings within a short timeframe.
