AltStore PAL goes free thanks to Epic Games grant

In a significant development for iOS enthusiasts, AltStore PAL, a popular third-party app store, is now available at no cost, thanks to a generous grant from Epic Games. This move eliminates the annual subscription fee for new users and ensures that existing subscribers will not incur any charges upon renewal.

AltStore, which first made waves in 2019, offered a unique workaround for iPhone users to access apps outside the official Apple App Store. Its relevance was heightened with the introduction of EU antitrust legislation, which mandated that Apple accommodate third-party app stores. Rebranded as AltStore PAL in response to these regulations, the platform initially allowed only apps from its creator, Riley Testut, before expanding to include third-party applications in recent weeks.

Historically, Apple’s stipulations for unofficial app stores included a Core Technology Fee (CTF) of €1.50 per year. Testut had passed this cost onto users through an annual subscription model. However, Epic Games’ recent MegaGrant has provided AltStore PAL with the necessary funds to cover this fee, thus making the app store free for all users. This grant is a testament to Epic Games’ commitment to fostering innovation in app distribution and enhancing accessibility within the digital ecosystem.

For existing subscribers, the transition to a free model means that there will be no additional charges at the time of subscription renewal. Testut has also hinted at plans to reward loyal subscribers with special benefits in an upcoming update, though specifics remain under wraps. The gesture underscores AltStore PAL’s appreciation for its user base and its dedication to maintaining a user-friendly experience without financial barriers.

With Epic Games’ support, AltStore PAL’s shift to a no-cost model marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of third-party app stores, promising greater accessibility and innovation for iOS users.
