Snowflake has announced its intent to acquire Crunchy Data, a specialized provider of enterprise-grade PostgreSQL solutions, as it sharpens its focus on equipping its AI Data Cloud with more robust database capabilities.
Crunchy Data, founded in 2012 and based in Charleston, South Carolina, is known for its enterprise-ready PostgreSQL deployments with enhanced security, scalability, and compliance—attributes critical for mission-critical workloads in both private and public sectors. The startup’s customer base includes major entities like UPS, SAS, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and numerous Fortune 500 firms.
The deal reflects an industry-wide push to strengthen the database infrastructure that supports AI agents and applications. Snowflake follows similar moves by competitors such as Databricks, which recently acquired Neon, another PostgreSQL-centric startup. The acquisition arms race underscores the growing demand for databases capable of supporting real-time, transactional AI use cases.
Through the integration, Snowflake will launch Snowflake Postgres, a fully managed, enterprise-grade PostgreSQL service. This new offering will be made available in private preview, aimed at helping customers and partners—such as Blue Yonder and LandingAI—streamline development, scale efficiently, and accelerate deployment of AI-powered apps.
Crunchy Data’s platform is particularly attractive to developers for its balance of performance monitoring, security, and simplified scalability. Snowflake plans to integrate these features directly into its AI Data Cloud, simplifying the movement and querying of data across platforms and increasing the appeal for enterprises looking to consolidate their AI infrastructure.
“This acquisition allows us to bring Postgres to our AI Data Cloud and meet growing enterprise demand for secure, high-performance, open-source database tools,” said Vivek Raghunathan, Snowflake’s SVP of Engineering. “We’re addressing a $350 billion market opportunity and enabling companies to build and deploy AI agents with confidence and speed.”
Crunchy Data will continue supporting its existing customers while becoming a core component of Snowflake’s PostgreSQL strategy. Snowflake executives also confirmed that the acquisition aligns with broader plans to unify transactional and analytical data, building on the company’s prior Unistore initiative.
The acquisition, subject to regulatory approval, further signals Snowflake’s competitive stance against cloud rivals in the AI era. As corporate clients increasingly seek out AI-ready data platforms, Snowflake is positioning its ecosystem to meet those demands with greater flexibility, security, and PostgreSQL compatibility.
