Google is rolling out a significant update to its Play Games profiles later this month, introducing new features that resemble elements found on platforms like Steam. Beginning September 23, 2025, user profiles will display gaming statistics, milestones, and additional social tools across Android devices and Play Games on Windows.
Currently, Play Games profiles mainly highlight achievements, with limited visibility and almost no social functions. The upcoming changes will make profiles more prominent and accessible within Google Play, allowing players to view their gameplay history and progress in greater detail.
To enable these features, Google will collect data such as the titles played and the time spent on them. This information will also be shared with developers to help optimize their games, in line with existing privacy policies. Developers will continue to send Google data on player activity, including achievements and progress.
Profile visibility settings already in place will carry over to the new system. For example, accounts set to “visible to everyone” will remain publicly viewable unless updated manually. Users who do not wish to participate can delete their Play Games profile at any time, though there is no option to opt out of the changes while keeping the profile active.
The update will go live worldwide on September 23, but in the EU and UK, the rollout is scheduled for October 1. Importantly, Play Games is not required to install or play Android games, meaning users who prefer not to share activity data can continue downloading and playing games directly from the Play Store without maintaining a Play Games profile.
