BuzzFeed has introduced a new suite of AI-driven mobile apps under a spinoff initiative called Branch Office, as the company explores alternative revenue paths amid ongoing financial challenges.
The announcement, made at the SXSW 2026 conference, outlines a shift toward consumer-facing software products designed to emphasize social interaction and creative participation. The new unit, operating independently, is tasked with developing apps that move away from traditional content feeds and algorithm-driven distribution.
Among the first products previewed are Conjure, a daily prompt-based photo app, and BF Island, a group messaging platform that incorporates AI-powered image editing and shared visual interactions. A third product, Quiz Party, builds on BuzzFeed’s legacy quiz format by introducing real-time social engagement features within a group setting.
The initiative reflects BuzzFeed’s broader experimentation with artificial intelligence over recent years. Rather than developing its own foundational AI models, the company is focusing on adapting existing technologies into interactive formats aimed at encouraging user participation and community-driven experiences.
However, the rollout comes at a critical moment for the company’s financial position. BuzzFeed recently disclosed a net loss of $57.3 million for 2025 and warned of “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue operations without addressing liquidity constraints. The company indicated that its 2026 strategy will prioritize monetizing its intellectual property and expanding its AI-based product portfolio.
Initial reactions to the app previews at SXSW were muted, raising questions about user adoption and long-term engagement. Some observers pointed to challenges faced by similar social apps, where early novelty has not translated into sustained usage.
The move underscores a broader industry trend, as media companies reassess their business models in response to the rapid proliferation of AI-generated content and shifting user behavior. For BuzzFeed, the success of these new applications may play a role in determining whether it can stabilize its position in an increasingly competitive digital landscape.
