Apple opens App Store to external payment links after court ruling in Epic Games case

Apple has revised its App Store Review Guidelines to allow apps distributed in the United States to include external payment links, following a decisive court ruling in its legal battle with Epic Games. The change marks a significant shift in Apple’s long-standing policies that have required developers to use its in-app purchase system, often criticized for its steep commission fees.

The updated guidelines were issued in response to a court injunction delivered by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who found that Apple had “willfully chosen not to comply” with the original ruling mandating the allowance of alternative payment options. This legal development is the latest in the long-running dispute between Apple and Epic Games, which began in 2020 over App Store policies and revenue sharing.

According to Apple’s announcement to developers, the revised policies specifically affect apps available on the U.S. App Store. The company has made it clear that:

Notably, the policy adjustments include changes to sections 3.1.1 and 3.1.3 of the App Store Review Guidelines. These updates apply broadly, including to apps that showcase NFT collections and other digital content.

The ruling and Apple’s compliance come amid growing pressure from developers and regulators globally who argue that Apple’s control over in-app transactions stifles competition and limits consumer choice. In a move that underscores the immediate impact of the policy change, Spotify submitted a revised version of its app that incorporates external payment links within hours of the announcement. Other companies, such as Patreon and Epic Games itself, have announced similar intentions. Epic plans to reintroduce Fortnite to the U.S. App Store with external payment capabilities.

While these changes are currently restricted to the U.S., Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has called on Apple to extend the policy globally, offering to drop ongoing litigation if Apple complies. Apple, however, has not responded publicly to the proposal and continues to pursue an appeal of the court’s ruling.
