Apple prepares to bring ads to Maps app in services revenue push

Apple is preparing to introduce advertising within Apple Maps, marking a further expansion of its services monetization strategy, according to Bloomberg.

The company is expected to roll out ads in search results as early as this summer, with a potential announcement anticipated in the coming weeks. The move would integrate sponsored placements directly into the Maps interface across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and web versions of the service.

Under the reported model, businesses will be able to bid for visibility tied to specific search queries. For example, restaurants, retailers, or service providers could pay to appear at the top of results when users search for relevant categories such as “coffee” or “sushi.” The system is expected to function similarly to advertising formats already used by Google in its mapping services.

The initiative, first reported back in October, is part of a broader effort by Apple to expand its services revenue, which has become an increasingly significant portion of its overall business. Advertising is expected to play a larger role as the company navigates potential changes to its App Store model and ongoing regulatory pressure, as well as uncertainty surrounding its search partnership with Google.

Apple has already been increasing ad inventory across its ecosystem. In recent months, the company expanded advertising placements within the App Store and rebranded its ad business under the “Apple Ads” umbrella, signaling a more coordinated push into the segment.

The addition of ads to Apple Maps would extend monetization into a product that has historically remained ad-free. While the feature could create new opportunities for local discovery and paid promotion, questions remain about how it may affect user experience, particularly in areas such as search relevance and privacy.

Apple has not publicly confirmed the plans.
