AltStore PAL integrates fediverse features to expand app discovery on iOS

AltStore PAL, an alternative iOS app marketplace operating under new regulatory frameworks in regions such as the European Union and Japan, has introduced a set of social web features that connect the platform to the broader fediverse ecosystem.

The update allows the marketplace to interact with decentralized social platforms that use the ActivityPub protocol, including Mastodon, Threads, PeerTube, and other federated services. By linking its marketplace to these networks, AltStore PAL is positioning its platform as what it describes as a federated app marketplace.

The integration is centered around a new Mastodon server operated by AltStore PAL. Developers distributing apps through the store can publish updates, announcements, or release notes that are automatically federated across ActivityPub-compatible platforms.

Users on federated networks can follow these accounts and receive updates about apps directly within their timelines. The posts can also be liked, shared, or commented on by users across the open social web, allowing interactions to flow between platforms rather than remaining confined to the marketplace itself.

Within the AltStore PAL app, users can sign in with accounts from services such as Mastodon or Bluesky to interact with these updates, including liking announcements or app updates. Those interactions are displayed directly in the marketplace interface.

Alongside the federated posting system, the update introduces a new Explore page that aggregates participating apps and developer sources. Developers can choose to have their apps federated to this page, where users can browse projects and follow update feeds.

Links to app updates and posts can also be shared externally or opened in a system browser, extending the visibility of developer announcements beyond the AltStore PAL interface.

At launch, several apps are already participating in the federated marketplace ecosystem, including the short-form video app Loops, the decentralized video platform PeerTube, and the Mastodon client iPhanpy.

The feature rollout arrives as AltStore PAL continues expanding its presence in markets where alternative app marketplaces on iOS are permitted under regulatory changes. The platform previously expanded from the European Union into Japan after local policy adjustments opened the door for competing app distribution channels on the iPhone.

Some larger applications are reportedly waiting to launch on the platform until changes to Apple’s commission structure in the EU are finalized, particularly the replacement of Apple’s Core Technology Fee with a new Core Technology Commission model.

The update also introduces a redesigned interface based on Apple’s Liquid Glass visual style and includes new app icons inspired by Japanese design themes.

With the addition of federated social features, AltStore PAL is experimenting with decentralized discovery tools to help developers distribute updates and announcements across multiple platforms simultaneously, while integrating those interactions directly into the app marketplace.
