Apple releases iOS 18.1 developer beta introducing first ‘Apple Intelligence’ features

Apple has released the developer betas for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, introducing users to the company’s first set of AI features. The move marks a significant step forward in integrating artificial intelligence into Apple’s ecosystem.

Among the new Apple Intelligence features available in the beta are an updated Siri with a redesigned interface and the ability to maintain context across multiple requests. Other notable additions include smart reply and email summaries in Mail, natural language search in Photos, and several other enhancements, as reported by 9to5Mac. However, Bloomberg notes that some of the more extensive AI updates for Siri are expected to roll out gradually, potentially extending into 2025.

How to Access the New AI Features

To access these updates, users will need an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, or an iPad or Mac equipped with an Apple Silicon chip. After installing the updates, users must join a waitlist via the Settings menu on their device and await a notification granting access, as demonstrated by a screenshot from @iSWUpdates on X.

Coinciding with the release of the 18.1 previews, Apple also rolled out a second public beta for iOS 18. This update includes features previously seen in a recent developer beta, such as RCS support on more carriers, new CarPlay wallpapers, and the option to use dark mode widgets while in light mode.

Early Testing to Ensure Stability

Interestingly, Apple’s approach with these AI updates is somewhat unconventional. Typically, Apple does not release betas for follow-up software updates before the initial version’s public launch. The initial version is expected to accompany the release of the iPhone 16 this fall. By splitting the AI updates into the 18.1 update and starting developer testing now, Apple aims to identify and resolve bugs, ensuring that the new features are stable and refined before they become widely available. This strategy minimizes the risk of potential issues affecting the launch of new iPhones and iPads as they start shipping with iOS and iPadOS 18.

Future Prospects for Apple’s AI Integration

Apple’s AI feature announcement was first made during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, with the public iOS 18 beta following on July 15th. This progressive rollout of AI features signifies Apple’s commitment to enhancing user experience through advanced technology while maintaining the reliability and performance of its devices.
