TikTok, the popular video-sharing platform, is introducing a novel tool aimed at enabling content creators to clearly label their AI-generated content. This move aligns with a broader industry trend towards greater transparency in acknowledging the involvement of AI in content creation. Furthermore, TikTok is in the early stages of testing automatic labeling for AI-generated content.
The primary motivation behind this development is the recognition that AI-generated content can sometimes perplex or mislead viewers. TikTok had previously revised its policy to make it mandatory for AI content featuring realistic images, audio, or video (such as deepfakes) to be labeled. The goal is to help viewers understand the context of the video and to prevent the spread of deceptive information.
The newly introduced tool simplifies the process for creators to adhere to TikTok’s policy regarding synthetic media. Creators can now label any content that has been entirely generated or significantly edited using AI. When a creator employs this tool, TikTok will display a message beneath the username on the video, indicating that it has been marked as AI-generated.
It’s important to note that TikTok does not intend to impose penalties on creators who do not label AI content that falls outside the scope of the existing synthetic media policy. Additionally, TikTok is actively exploring ways to automatically detect and label AI-generated content. This week, it will initiate testing of an “AI-generated” label for content that has been edited or created using AI.
Specific details about TikTok’s AI detection technology are not being disclosed to prevent potential misuse. The platform is also considering partnerships to enhance AI detection by embedding AI labels directly into content.
As part of this transparency initiative, TikTok will rename all its effects that utilize AI by explicitly including “AI” in their names. TikTok sought input from its Safety Advisory Councils and industry experts during the development of these AI labels. Additionally, TikTok will provide educational resources to help users gain a better understanding of AI.
While AI labels on TikTok are beginning to roll out, users may not immediately see them until the rollout is completed.
Recently, TikTok received a $370 million fine amid its data privacy breaches of the EU.
