User Sessions in Food and Drink Apps Hit 62 billion in Q4 2021

According to data.ai, despite the gradual reopening of bars and restaurants, global user sessions in food and delivery apps rose nearly 69% to 62 billion in Q4 2021.

The report found that Russia recorded the largest annual increase in user sessions, increasing to 2.1 billion a year later, from 832 million sessions in Q4 2020. Meanwhile, after a two-quarter drop in user sessions due to logistical issues, India has bounced back from 7.2 billion user sessions to 12.1 billion sessions in one year. Brazil, Indonesia and the US also recorded strong year-over-year increases in user sessions in food and delivery apps.

UberEATS scored at #1 or #2 in the 2021 Food and Drink app chart by monthly active users across 8 countries, while its competitor Grab was #1 by MAU in six regions.

On the other hand, instant delivery apps also attracted great attention last year. Germany-based Gorillas and Flink saw their apps downloaded over 1 million times in Q4 2021 alone, data.ai says. Turkish delivery company Getir, which has become Europe’s first grocery delivery decacorn after raising $768 million Series E, hit nearly 7 million downloads worldwide in Q4 2021, up 105% from Q3.

Apart from food delivery apps, consumers also spend time in QSR (quick service restaurant) products. Burger King, Papa Johns and KFC also feature prominently across all regions, but McDonalds was the most popular.

Per AdColony’s Mobile Trends in QSR report, nearly two-thirds (65%) of mobile gamers said they order takeaway food from quick-service restaurants via an app or website more than they did a year ago.
