The Story Of Facebook: How & Why It Was Founded

Facebook is undoubtedly one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. With 2.4 billion active users per month, the technology giant continues to grow steadily. Have you ever wondered its story? How was this social media giant with a total value of more than $659.28 billion founded?

Facebook, founded in February 2004, is the second website created by Mark Zuckerberg. The first one was called Facemash, and it was the first social networking site to include information and pictures of Harvard students.

Rumour has it that this website looked like this:

But because Zuckerberg used the students’ information and images without permission from the school administration, Facemash was closed after a while.

Later, Zuckerberg decided to set up a social networking site where users could create private or public profiles and communicate with each other easily.

In order to create this social media platform, he took a break from his school for a year and began coding it with the support of his roommates.

And this is how ‘’thefacebook’’ looked like when it was first designed. Then the platform was named in the way that we know it today.

Facebook’s name comes from Paper Facebook, the form that students, teachers, and school staff in the United States filled in to introduce themselves.

On February 5, 2004, the coding process was over and Facebook was made available to Harvard students.

Initially only available to Harvard students, Facebook’s reputation spread rapidly and soon became available to students from other countries such as Canada, Britain and Mexico.

In 2006, Facebook became available to anyone over the age of 13 with valid e-mail addresses and soon became a world-famous website.

The story does not end here. Facebook bought Instagram for a billion on April 9, 2012, and maximised its influence in the social media industry. Click here to read the story of Instagram.

On February 19, 2014, Facebook acquired Whatsapp and thus entered the messaging app industry. (Learn more about the story of WhatsApp.)
