The size of the top 10 most-downloaded apps in the US App Store grew 298%, or approximately 4 times, over the last five years, according to Sensor Tower.
For the research, the marketing intelligence firm analyzed the top 10 apps by downloads for May, which are YouTube, TikTok, Messenger, Facebook, Zoom, Netflix, Instagram, Gmail, Google Maps, and Amazon.
While these apps required 550 megabytes of storage in 2016, they now require 2.2 gigabytes as of May 2021. Meanwhile, the company only included the core app size in the research.
Gmail’s app size grew 18x over the last 5 years
According to the data, Gmail’s app size grew 1797%, or 18%, over the last 5 years. While the app required 19MB free storage in 2016, it requires 355MB now.
At the same time, TikTok’s app size grew 6x, Instagram’s size grew 6x and YouTube’s size grew 5x.
Meanwhile, Messenger, Amazon, Netflix and Facebook saw the least increase in the app size.
The size of top games grew 197% in five years
Sensor Tower also found that the size of the top 10 most downloaded mobile games on the US App Store grew 197% over the last 5 years.
The top 10 list includes Roblox, PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile, Among Us, Subway Surfers, Helix Jump, Wordscapes, Homescapes, and Hole.io.
While these apps required 2.6 GB free storage in January 2018, they now require 7.6 GB as of May 2021.
According to Sensor Tower, while Apple introduces brand new technologies every year at its Worldwide Developers Conference, when these new technologies are implemented to mobile apps, they inevitably cause an increase in app size.
