NFTs are coming to Instagram, Mark Zuckerberg says

At the SXSW conference, held in Austin, Texas, Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company is working on the technical functionality for users to display their non-fungible tokens on its popular photo and video sharing app.

“We’re working on bringing NFTs to Instagram in the near term,” Zuckerberg said Tuesday. “I’m not ready to announce exactly what that’s going to be today, but, over the next several months, the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, and hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment.”

Last year, head of Instagram Adam Mosseri said the company was “actively exploring NFTs”. “I think it’s an interesting place that we can play and also to hopefully help creators,” Mosseri said.

Zuckerberg said that “a bunch of technical things that need to get worked out before that’ll really be seamless to happen.”

Instagram is not the first major social media company to embrace NFTs. In January 2022, Twitter rolled out a feature that allowed some users to use NFTs as their profile picture. The feature, being offered to iOS users of Twitter’s Blue subscription service in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, can be used via connecting Twitter accounts to crypto wallets and the NFT profile pictures are displayed in a hexagonal shape.
