Despite being launched just two weeks ago, Warner Bros. Games’ new open-world action RPG title Hogwarts Legacy has managed to generate $850 million and sell 12 million units.
The company announced that the hit title, which takes place in the Harry Potter universe, has been played for over 280 hours so far since its arrival on Feb 10, and also become the most watched single-player game on streaming platform Twitch with over 1.28 million hours of viewership.
“We are so thrilled and proud to see the player response to ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ from gamers, fans who are new to gaming and reviewers around the world,” said Warner Bros. Games President David Haddad in a statement. “Our development team at Avalanche delivered an amazing, high-quality Wizarding World experience that truly fulfills the fan fantasy of life at Hogwarts and our publishing teams have executed a globally impactful launch campaign.”
Warner Bros. Games first announced Hogwarts Legacy back in September 2020 saying that it would come out in 2021. However, the company later postponed it to 2022, and eventually to February 10 this year, garnering great criticism from Harry Potter fans. In addition, many gamers decided to boycott the game because of J.K. Rowling’s controversial comments about the transgender community.
Still, following the announcement of the latest release date, the title became the most wishlisted game on Steam last October, and one of the most anticipated games of 2023.
Hogwarts Legacy is currently playable on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X & S. It will be released on PlayStation 4 and XboX One on April 4, and Nintendo Switch on July 25.
