Google Play has introduced a “Verified” badge for consumer-facing VPN applications. This development builds upon Google’s previous efforts, such as last year’s introduction of the “Government” badge. By distinguishing VPN apps that prioritize user privacy and meet rigorous security standards, Google aims to provide users with a more informed and safer app selection process.
The new badge, represented by a shield and checkmark, is prominently displayed next to the app rating above the “Install” button. It also appears in search results under a “VPN security badging” banner, creating visibility for verified apps. According to Google, this initiative seeks to help users make smarter choices about VPN apps and build trust in the services they download. By recognizing apps that adhere to stringent security measures, Google hopes to foster a safer marketplace for Android users.
To qualify for this badge, developers must meet several key requirements, including completing the Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2 validation, holding an Organization developer account, and meeting Google’s target API level requirements. Furthermore, eligible apps must have at least 10,000 installs, 250 user reviews, and be published on Google Play for a minimum of 90 days. A critical component is submitting a comprehensive Data Safety declaration, including an independent security review and encryption in transit.
Although Google emphasized that fulfilling these criteria significantly increases the chances of receiving the badge, it noted that additional factors may be considered in the evaluation process. Early recipients of the badge include industry leaders like NordVPN, hide.me, and Aloha Browser.
VPN providers are welcoming the badge as a vital step toward strengthening user trust. NordVPN expressed enthusiasm, stating that the badge offers reassurance to customers while highlighting developers’ commitment to security. Hide.me echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the badge as a validation of their robust security practices. Aloha Browser noted that the certification process fosters discipline in development practices, benefiting end users through increased security and satisfaction.
Developers are encouraged to start the validation process to take advantage of this opportunity and strengthen their app’s profile. With the badge now prominently displayed, Google Play hopes to create a safer and more transparent app environment for millions of Android users.
