The popular social media app BeReal is undergoing significant restructuring following its acquisition by Voodoo, resulting in a series of layoffs. This decision comes as the company shifts its focus to streamline operations and concentrate on talent within France and Europe.
BeReal’s Chief Operating Officer, Romain Salzman, revealed on LinkedIn that 28 employees from the engineering, quality assurance, and marketing departments were let go. Salzman emphasized that this move is part of a strategic realignment to strengthen the company’s European talent pool.
The acquisition of BeReal by Voodoo, completed last month for €500 million, saw Aymeric Roffé, CEO of Wizz, stepping in to replace Alexis Barreyat, the app’s founder and former CEO. This leadership change marks a new chapter for BeReal as it aims for sustainable growth under Voodoo’s guidance.
In a statement to PocketGamer, the company expressed its regret over the layoffs but stressed the necessity of the decision for future growth. “As we focus on our next steps and growing BeReal in a sustainable way, we made the difficult decision to let some team members go,” the statement read. “We will be supporting impacted team members and are incredibly grateful for their contributions. We are committed to maintaining BeReal’s mission and values.”
This restructuring indicates BeReal’s commitment to refining its strategy and consolidating its efforts within the European market while aiming for long-term sustainability and adherence to its core values.
