Aptoide, a well-known alternative app marketplace, has officially launched its iOS store for users across the European Union. After debuting in beta in June 2024 with an extensive waitlist of 20,000 users, Aptoide is now fully operational, offering iPhone and iPad users a fresh way to access games and apps outside Apple’s traditional App Store.
One of the standout features of Aptoide’s iOS launch is the introduction of App Versions, which allows users to install older iterations of apps and games. Previously exclusive to Android, this functionality benefits users with older devices that may not support newer software updates or those who prefer past versions of their favorite games.
Aptoide’s arrival on iOS was made possible by the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which compels Apple to allow third-party app stores on its platform. This regulatory shift also enabled other companies, such as Epic Games, to establish independent marketplaces, bringing games like Fortnite and Fall Guys back to iOS in the EU.
Paulo Trezentos, CEO of Aptoide, emphasized the significance of this launch, stating, “This marks a major milestone in game distribution on iOS and reinforces our commitment to an open and unrestricted app ecosystem. While Apple users now enjoy newfound freedoms, there’s still substantial work ahead to further open iOS and streamline the experience for both users and developers.”
Aptoide also provides an alternative in-app payment system, supported by its proprietary IAP software development kit (SDK), developed in collaboration with Apple. This addition allows developers greater flexibility in monetization strategies.
Now accessible via the Aptoide website, the platform offers a growing library of games and applications, giving EU iOS users an expanded range of choices beyond Apple’s App Store. As the alternative app ecosystem evolves, Aptoide aims to play a crucial role in shaping a more diverse and competitive digital marketplace.
