Apple’s updated Today tab ads have started appearing on the App Store with their new more compact design, as reported by 9to5Mac.
Last month, the tech giant announced upcoming changes to the ad format, which lets developers showcase their apps on the front page of the App Store, saying that they would go live starting in July.
With the new update, the ad format now has gained a more compact design, allowing users to view an ad when they first open the App Store, without the hassle of scrolling or taking any actions to access further information about the promoted product.
Clicking on the new Today tab ads, which feature an app’s icon, name and subtitle along with a ‘’Get’’ button and an ‘’Ad’’ label, takes iOS users to the custom product page of the app.
Since the new format doesn’t have a custom graphic, it will also simplify the ad approval process for developers, according to Apple. However, the iPhone-maker will still review the app’s icon, name, and subtitle, and it won’t allow ads with ‘’content that’s considered violent, offensive, sexually explicit, or otherwise inappropriate’’ as well as images that contain ‘’guns, weapons, or graphic violence’’.
Meanwhile, the new format is only available on iPhones with iOS 16.4 or later. It’s currently not available on the App Store in mainland China.
Apple first introduced the Today tab ad format in October last year, when it expanded its Search Ads to the main page of the app store, and also to custom product pages on its marketplace. However, the latter eventually led Apple to block gambling ads from appearing in product pages, after receiving complaints from developers that they would impact their reputation.
